![]() The story is more or less a reason to give Shadow his gameplay mechanics and a really enjoyable final boss battle and that’s all a story really has to do in a game like this. The game became more about whether I could overcome the obstacles in my way rather than any narrative thread but that’s okay. ![]() It never engaged me like other text based stories have done like in Hollow Knight but that might have been because I was not all that interested after struggling on one section of a chapter for over an hour. One of my favorite characters isn’t even remotely human (look out for the motorcycle sequence in the latter half of the game) but I have to admit that I didn’t really care for the overall plot that much. I love the juxtaposition between tradition and technology for both good, evil and everything in between. The premise for Cyber Shadow is phenomenal. Their plan is to take the powers of people within the ninja clan and combine them with the technology being provided by the new master. Upon revival, Shadow must find where his master’s spirit lies, defeat his old rival who happens to be following a new master. Cyber Shadow takes a lot of inspiration from classic games like Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden so that should give you some indication where the difficulty sits with this game.Īctually, Cyber Shadow is a lot like if Ninja Gaiden and Megan Man had a child as the gameplay is all about navigating increasingly difficult sections of platforming and enemy resistance while constantly being given new upgrades for Shadow.Ĭyber Shadow is about a cybernetic ninja who was brought back to life by the AI of his old master. I even felt some Dark Souls aspects creeping out because of the brutal location of respawns and the unforgiving boss fights. Each boss and area had its own personality with subtle references to classic platformers including Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, and Castlevania. As the ninja slices through each level, he can reclaim the spirits of his fallen clan that give the cyborg ninja incredible powers such as wall-slide and more.Īrtistic pixilation adds to that immersive 90s experience with full 8-bit hand-crafted sprites and animations that are unique yet feel familiar. ![]() The robotic companion leads them through the remains of Mekacity to stop the cybernetically mutated doctor and the synthetic army under his control. After succumbing to a large blast, the cybernetic ninja is found partially recovered in a restoration chamber by L-Gion. It follows a ninja named Shadow who was the last of his clan that was decimated by the twisted experiments of Dr. The story presentation follows that classic style of mixing 8-bit cutscenes with written dialogue. The faithful adaption of the retro style throughout all its aspects is one of the best parts of this game. Cyber Shadow is a single-player indie reminiscent of the original Ninja Gaiden in both gameplay and story. So, I was excited when its producer, Yacht Club Games, put out a new 90s throwback title.
